Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) (after) : "Young couple under an umbrella", woodcut in several plates, 35.5 X 26.6 cm image plus margin line on three sides. Slightly sunned, pinholes in the corners, traces of tape on the back, circa 1900.
Grand Master of Ukiyo-e, Utamaro had a prolific career despite his short life.
Particularly known for his portraits of Beautiful Ladies, he delivers here a superb composition where the young woman ties her obi on her kimono, protected from the sun by her fiancé who looks at her lovingly.
