Object description :

"French 3-masted Sailboat The Genevieve Molinos"
Oil on canvas depicting a 3-masted ship under full sail flying the French flag in the center of a buoy on which is written Geneviève Molinos Le Havre with two flags, one French and one Russian. We can read in the cartouche at the top left “Campagne du Chili 1911-1912” and in the one on the right “mune 17 janvier 1912”. The Marguerite-Molinos is a French three-masted sailing ship built in Le Havre in 1896 and demolished in 1928. It takes its name from the daughter of Léon Isidore Molinos, founder of the Compagnie des forges et aciéries de la marine et d’Homécourt, as well as president of the Société des Voiliers Français founded in 1896 and whose first boat was the one bearing the name of his daughter. This company is also called Compagnie Molinos, among the directors are: Dolfus-Galline, Fautrel, Dolfus, Roux, Laurans, Molinos as well as Count Charles Walewski (1848-1916) who gave their name to several of the company's sailing ships.
