KUWASSEG Charles Euphrasie (Draveil 1838-1904 Paris), attributed to
Beach scene in Normandy with figures and boats
Oil on panel, 21.5 x 40.5 cm
Wax stamp on reverse "SM imbriqué"
The ARTIST
Son of Austrian painter Karl-Joseph Kuwasseg, after working with his father he
enlisted as a sailor. Returning to France in 1883, he was a pupil of Durand-Brager and Isabey.
He made his debut in 1855 at the Paris Salon, where he remained a loyal exhibitor. He devoted himself more
particularly to the study of gales on the Breton coast and in the North Sea,
with works also reproducing landscapes of the Normandy countryside or the suburbs
of Paris. He also worked with Poilpot on various panoramas. He exhibited
regularly at the salons des Artistes Français and won a third medal in
1892. His delicate yet strong talent earned him the esteem of all connoisseurs.
The master's workmanship is clearly recognizable here, and we can imagine that our painting
was one of a pair, the other of which was signed, a logical assumption in the absence of a signature.
