"Christ With The Reed – Circle Of Luis De Morales (circa 1570)"
Christ with a Reed – Circle of Luis de Morales (circa 1570) Oil on canvas – Original canvas Dimensions: H. 54 cm × W. 38 cm Origin: Spain, Second half of the 16th century #ReligiousCollection A moving representation of Christ crowned with thorns holding the derisory reed, a symbol of power mocked during the Passion. Christ is depicted standing, slightly bent, his right hand brushing his side, in a posture of dignified resignation. The partially draped body, the golden light and the delicate modeling give this scene a striking spiritual intensity. This painting clearly relates to the aesthetic developed by Luis de Morales (1509–1586), known as El Divino, a major painter of Spanish Golden Age. Here we find the characteristic features of his entourage: the melancholic expressiveness of the face, the soft chiaroscuro, the meticulous rendering of the flesh and a very marked mystical interiority. This type of work, conceived for private devotion, testifies to the religious fervor of the time while illustrating the lasting influence of Morales on 16th-century Spanish painting. - Original canvas mounted on an old stretcher.
