"Chanteau Gabriel (1874-1955) - Oval Pastel Of His Wife."
From a family originally from the Angers region, Gabriel Chanteau studied at the Bernard-Palissy Municipal School and then at the National School of Fine Arts where he was a student of Luc-Olivier Merson and Albert Besnard. He produced portraits, portraits-charges and decorative painting but is especially known for his seascapes. Official painter of the Navy, he received a medal from the Central Union of Decorative Arts as well as from the Society for the Encouragement of Art and Industry, and exhibited at the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts as well as in numerous galleries in the West and South of France. Gabriel Chanteau also drew numerous illustrations for bibliophile works. His works were kept at the Hôtel de la Croix de Guerre in Angers and at the Museum of Fine Arts in Nantes. This frame has its glass broken, the frame is original to the work.
