“Nude with drapery, Venus in the bath”

In the tradition of representations of bathers and Venus in the bath, Fernand David offers us, while respecting the codes of the subject, a more carnally modern image of the female body, without abandoning figurative accuracy. This marble, dated 1913, announces a more sculptural treatment of femininity, which we will find after the war under the chisel of Aristide Maillol, Gaston Contesse or even Charles Despiau. A student of Barrias, Jules Cavelier and Léon Fagel at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Fernand David exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1898 to 1914, where he received an Honorable Mention in 1899, a 3rd class medal in 1901 and a travel grant in 1904.
