19th-century Painted Porcelain Plaque – Saint Michael The Archangel Defeating Satan
A magnificent 19th-century hand-painted porcelain plaque depicting Saint Michael the Archangel vanquishing Satan. This finely executed oil painting on porcelain illustrates the famous biblical scene from the Book of Revelation (12:7–9), in which the Archangel Michael, leader of the heavenly host, defeats the forces of evil. Clad in blue armor with a flowing red cloak, the archangel is shown brandishing his sword in triumph. Under his foot lies the fallen Satan — depicted with dark wings and horns — chained amid fiery flames, symbolizing the ultimate defeat of evil. The iconography is rendered with remarkable detail and vivid coloration, imbuing the piece with dramatic spiritual intensity.
The plaque is presented in an ornate Rococo-style giltwood frame with openwork acanthus scrolls. This decorative gold frame, in the Louis XV rocaille taste, magnificently complements the artwork and speaks to the elegance of the period. The style of the frame and the porcelain painting technique were especially popular in the mid to late 19th century (Napoleon III era), which helps date the creation of this piece to that time. The combination of a religious theme and a Rococo revival frame indicates a circa XIXth-century origin, when hand-painted porcelain plaques of famous religious scenes were highly sought after.
Condition: Excellent. The porcelain plaque is intact with no cracks or chips, and the oil colors remain fresh and vibrant (no visible touch-ups or restorations). The gilded wooden frame is also in very good condition, with an attractive aged patina and only minor wear to the gilding consistent with its age. On the reverse, the porcelain bears a maker’s mark or numbering, further authenticating the piece and hinting at its origin (likely a European manufactory of the 19th century).
With its emblematic subject and high-quality craftsmanship, this artwork is a truly outstanding collectible. The refined painting technique combined with the sumptuous frame make it a captivating object for collectors of religious art and discerning antique enthusiasts alike, offering both decorative grandeur and a profound historical-spiritual significance.
