A misericord (or "miserere" or "propitiatory") is a small, hinged wooden support or ledge located under the drop-down seats in a church, usually from the medieval period. When the stall seat is folded down, the projecting misericord forms a ledge to lean on when standing. Although not quite a seat, the miserere usually provides support for monks, canons, and other clergy who would lean on it. This was useful for the elderly and infirm when it was necessary to stand during long services – especially in the Roman Catholic faith – as it reduced their discomfort.
