Object description :

"Large Virgin And Child, Champagne, Circa 1500"
Large Virgin and Child in walnut wood, carved in the round, trampling Eve biting the apple. The theme of the Virgin and Child is the most represented in all Christian art, while the childhood of Jesus is almost completely ignored by the canonical evangelists. This representation is probably the result of a realization of an archaic theme (Isis breastfeeding Harpocrates, the child Horus). We thus find numerous representations of the "woman and child" in most cultures of the world, including in pre-Christian Europe. Very beautiful presence by the quality of the sculpture and by its dimensions (height 1.20m) The Child holds a dove, the Virgin a scepter. Walnut wood waxed with hot wax, good general condition. Workshops of Champagne, end of the 15th beginning of the 16th century.
