Directoire period trumeau – High relief in gilded plaster with brown patina – Mythological allegory – Circa 1795-1800Superb Directoire period trumeau, measuring 94 cm wide by 152 cm high, typical of decorative woodwork ensembles from the end of the 18th century. The upper part is decorated with a hand-carved high relief on a plasterboard plaque, representing a scene inspired by Greek mythology: Ganymede, a young ephebe of great beauty, is depicted here at the moment when the eagle of Zeus, descended from Olympus, comes to drink from his hand – a symbol of divine rapture and spiritual elevation. The decor is completed by a stylized neoclassical drape, suspended at the top, elegantly framing the scene. The entire relief, including the molded frames, is covered in brown patinated gilding, typical of the Directoire period, giving a sober and warm depth, quite distinct from the more flashy shine of the gold leaf. The background is a deep, matte blue, close to Prussian blue or Ink blue, which particularly highlights the gilding. The lower part of the trumeau is occupied by an antique mirror, in good condition, with some slight pitting that testifies to its authenticity. Some paint losses are visible on the outer edges of the trumeau, recalling that it was once part of a wood paneling decor. It is quite possible to repaint the white parts, either in a shade coordinated with your interior, or even by using this deep blue to create a chromatic harmony between the background and the frame. Rare and decorative piece, a refined witness to the Directoire style, between neoclassical rigor and allegorical poetry. Ideal for an elegant decoration, a classic interior or a project of reintegration into a period woodwork.
