Note: this is one of the oldest paintings by Alice Bally who had not yet changed her name to Alice Bailly (with an "i"). It dates from 1901 as indicated by the exhibition label on the back. This painting is similar in subject matter to the paintings of the great Swiss painter Albert Anker, who made childhood his favorite theme. The same goes for the chiaroscuro atmosphere, which directly evokes it. Interestingly, Albert Anker was exhibiting a painting entitled "The Lazy Little Ones" at this same exhibition...
