Oil on canvas depicting a horsewoman riding sidesaddle. An elegant lady out for a walk accompanied by her dog in a green landscape. The colors are vivid and the atmosphere peaceful.
Oil on canvas signed lower left John Lewis Brown in its original frame.
Two small old restorations on the back of the canvas. (see photo)

ean Louis Brown (known as John Lewis Brown), born in 1829 in Bordeaux, died in 1890 is a French painter and engraver. He is known for his hunting and battle scenes, and his studies of horses and dogs.
Coming from an old Scottish family, he settled in Paris around 1840 and studied first at the National Veterinary School of Alfort, then at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, in the studios of Camille Roqueplan (1803-1855) and Jean-Hilaire Belloc (1786-1866).
He painted pictures of the American War of Independence, the Seven Years' War and the War of 1870 between France and Prussia, but was also a distinguished engraver, as he produced numerous lithographs, aquaeetintes, etchings, monotypes and soft varnishes.
