Relined and old restorations, bears a label with the number 17 at the bottom right.
A friend of Lautrec who was also his student, Grand Master of equine representations, he left us numerous paintings both on hunting with hounds and on rural life which at the time mainly used animal traction for field work.
Our scene is linked to this second group with the young peasant woman riding bareback who brings her horses back to the farm at nightfall.
The touch, in a very spirited sketch and reworked with the handle of the brush in the fresh material, is extremely suggestive and teeming with details: the light crescent moon beginning to emerge, the happy smile of the rider, or the foal which, after stopping to graze on an appetizing grass or watch a butterfly, starts running again to join its parents…
This painting appeared under number 17 in the auction of June 17, 1963 at the Hôtel Drouot by the ministry of Maître Boscher assisted by the expert Bernard Lorenceau “24 paintings by René Princeteau from his studio and a painting by Toulouse-Lautrec” under the Title “The farmer and her horses”.
