"Bembe Statuette - Kongo - Colonial Work 1930-50"
The Béembé or Babéembé, a group living in the south of the Republic of Congo, are a Kongo ethnic group, descended from the Bantu people of Central Africa. Bembe statuettes represented ancestors, were linked to the fight against evil spells or certain contributed to the fertility of the fields. This example is a colonial work. Period 1930-50. It has pearl eyes, like some examples preserved at the Musée du Quai Branly (see last photo of the slideshow). Reattached arms - chip on one finger - oxidized wood.
