Object description :

"André-antoine Ravrio, Pair Of Empire Period Candlesticks. "
André-Antoine Ravrio, pair of Empire period candlesticks.

Beautiful pair of finely chiseled and gilded bronze candlesticks from the Empire period. Each candlestick stands on a round base decorated with a frieze of water leaves and gadroons radiating around the stem.
The latter, with eight sides, is adorned with palmettes at the collar and a very finely matted ball, matte at the tip, set with a fine laurel wreath.
At the top, the socket takes the form of a Medici vase with a gadrooned base. The bobeches feature a frieze of water leaves decorating the base.

Four identical torches were delivered to the Garde Meuble for the Palace of Fontainebleau, by André-Antoine Ravrio, "bronzier-gilder rue de Richelieu No. 93 in Paris" in July 1810.

Beautiful state of preservation, original gilding.

Empire period, 1800-1810.

André Antoine Ravrio (1759-1814):
One of the most illustrious manufacturers of artistic bronze of the end of the 18th and 1st Empire.
André Antoine Ravrio was appointed master founder in 1777 and set up his own business in 1790.
He ran a major establishment under the Empire. Ravrio supplied furniture bronzes for the imperial palaces and for a prestigious clientele (the Emperor Napoleon, Prince Murat, Louis Bonaparte, etc.).
If we go back to his origins, André-Antoine Ravrio belonged to a family of famous artists related to a renowned cabinetmaker Vandercruse.
Ravrio chose his father's profession, that of bronzesmith, and very quickly became a sought-after craftsman at the end of the Ancien Régime.
What is less well known about this exceptional master bronzesmith was that the latter was gifted with a talent for writing.
He composed numerous poems and was the author of several vaudevilles. He was a member of numerous literary and charitable societies.
He was also the creator of a prize of 3,000 francs to enable the discovery of a preventive means to combat the dangers of using mercury in the practice of the profession of gilder on metals.
