This painting, clearly echoing the famous David with the Head of Goliath by Michele Desubleo (Maubeuge, 1601 – Parma, 1676), now housed at the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest, is a refined execution dating from the first half of the 19th century, likely by a German or Italian hand.
It portrays a young David in a three-quarter pose, with a proud, contemplative gaze. He wears a feathered hat and firmly grasps a sword in his left hand. The work shows strong Caravaggesque influence in the dramatic lighting and volumetric realism, yet the idealized composition and formal elegance recall the classicist aesthetics of Domenichino, a hallmark of Desubleo's mature style.
The canvas is in good overall condition but shows some minor surface abrasions and yellowing of the varnish. Cleaning and minor restoration are recommended and can be arranged by our gallery upon request.
An imposing giltwood frame, in excellent condition, enhances the visual impact and decorative value of the piece.
