« La vallée où se trouve La Chaux-de-Fonds était au milieu du 15e siècle une contrée sauvage, marécageuse et couverte de forêts. Ce hameau prit ensuite les proportions d’un village, qui fit partie successivement des mairies de Valangin, du Locle et de la Sagne. En 1656 cette localité qui comptait près de 1000 habitants s’érigea en commune et en juridiction ».
