He studied at the Haarlem School of Drawing and the Amsterdam School of Applied Arts, then continued his training at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam from 1892 to 1896, under the direction of artists such as August Allebé and Nicolaas van der Waay.
