Object description :

"Georges d'Espagnat 1870-1950 Young Nude Woman"
Painting representing a young naked woman signed Georges d'Espagnat born August 14, 1870 in Melun and died April 17, 1950 in Paris is a French painter, illustrator and engraver. In 1888, Georges d'Espagnat entered the School of Decorative Arts and the School of Fine Arts in Paris. Endowed with a strong and very independent character, he preferred to train alone by making copies of paintings, notably from the Louvre Museum. A talented draftsman and engraver, he contributed to numerous illustrated periodicals such as Le Courrier français (1895-1896), La Critique and Le Rire (1899-1912). He is the author of original lithographs. Practicing wood engraving, he used the penknife and obtained an expressionist rendering. He thus gave several woodcuts to L'Ymagier directed by Remy de Gourmont whose novel Sixtine (1922) he illustrated. He is the father of the physicist Bernard d'Espagnat (1921-2015) and the cousin of the painter and engraver Christian d'Espic (1901-1978).
