Impressive walnut armchair, most likely from the Mantua area, dating to the late 16th or early 17th century. The height of the seat (58 cm) and the overall proportions suggest it was custom-made for a person of high status—possibly a bishop or a tall dignitary.
The frame features rich and elaborate turning, with leg finishes that evoke zoomorphic forms, giving the piece a striking sculptural presence.
Especially notable are the gilt ornaments crowning the top of the backrest—commonly referred to as “artichokes”—which are executed with exceptional carving quality and reflect the skill of the period's craftsmen.
Condition: the walnut structure is solid, with some old but inactive traces of woodworm. The textile upholstery, of antique manufacture and woven on a loom, is in very poor condition. The back panel, made of sewn and glued cardboard, also requires either full replacement or extensive restoration.
Dimensions:
Overall height: 150 cm
Width: 47 cm
