Albert Marquet, an emblematic painter of the modern period, was born in Bordeaux into a modest background. His physique made integration difficult, drawing and observing sailboats then became the refuge of his childhood, revealing a precocious talent.
Encouraged by his mother in his practice, the artist moved to Paris to follow the courses of Decorative Arts where he met Matisse. Together, they would be actors in the Fauvist adventure by opting for a synthetic touch and pure colors. Albert Marquet was above all a solitary artist, who made painting the catalyst of the elements. Water was a predominant motif in his production, represented in all its forms according to time, light and his environment.
Our drawing is a wonderful example of this poetry of everyday life. The simplicity of the line makes the serenity of an afternoon by the pond shine. Artist of silence and the sea, painter of water and light, Albert Marquet illustrates a soft and delicate world.
