Object description :

"Empire Period High Stepped Desk Attributed To Jacob"
Magnificent and imposing high-stepped desk from the Empire period, attributed to Jacob, in mahogany veneer on oak frames.
Flamed mahogany on all sides.
Mirrored veneer on the high step, at the back of the desk and on the sides of the pedestals.
Magnificent french polish.

Step with Ionic columns, a central niche, two side pedestals and four beautiful recent green and gilded cartonniers.

The top is covered with a period green leather, gilded, opening with three large drawers, two of which are in pedestals. A hiding place is in the one on the right. Two quarter palmettes seem to support the central drawer.
Two side shelves enlarge this desk. The front and back jambs are curved, with verdigris and gold leaf patina of lion claws, are connected in lateral pairs by a spacer, ogee base. Raised spinning top legs.

Dimensions:
. Length: 163 cm
. Length with open shelves: 214 cm
. Total height: 115 cm
. Height of the top: 77 cm
. Depth: 82 cm

All these elements allow us to attribute this majestic desk to the great family of cabinetmakers Jacob-Desmalter (1770-1841), one of the greatest cabinetmakers of the Empire.

Created in 1796 under the name of Jacob-Frères (Georges II and François-Honoré-Georges) following their father Georges 1er, the family business became Jacob-Desmalter in 1803 on the death of Georges II (Desmalter for the family geographical origin in Yonne, des Malterres). They supplied the great imperial palaces by employing up to several dozen skilled workers (carpenters, sculptors, cabinetmakers, bronze chasers, etc.), until bankruptcy in 1813. Eventually, the house survived until 1846 and was taken over by Jeanselme.

A key is functional for all the drawers, as well as for the secret hiding place.
Restored by our workshops.
