Pair Of Green Glazed Ceramic Foo Dogs, China, 19th Century
Pair of Chinese guardian Fo dogs in deep green glazed ceramic. These traditional figures symbolizing protection were once placed at the entrance to homes and temples to ward off harmful influences. Their expressive appearance, the stylized treatment of the manes and decorative scrolls give them a lot of character. The architectural bases, formed of superimposed steps, emphasize their stability and their role as sentinels. The green enamel has subtle nuances and a slight shimmer, accentuating the lively effect of the surface. The bases still bear an old red wax seal, evidence of an ancient export. Beautiful patina.
