"Drawing By Carlos Schwabe - Bather With Amphorae"
Carlos SCHWABE (Hamburg 1866 - 1926 Avon) Bather with Amphoraecirca 189930 x 21 cmgraphite on paper, squared in blue pencilsigned 'C. Schwabe' lower rightHaving had no academic training except at the Ecole des Arts Industriels in Geneva, Carlos Schwabe is a visionary and mystical artist. Known for his fervent commitment to the Salons de la Rosique-Croix, he is one of the main participants in the symbolist meeting organized by Sâr Péladan.Possessed by his ideal, by a certain pantheism that he owes to his Germanic origins but also by his religious concerns, he is an artist who certainly did not leave anyone indifferent. The accuracy of his drawing and the strangeness of his universe allowed him to be noticed and earned him recognition as one of the great illustrators of the time. Important links with the world of bibliophily were created: he illustrated Baudelaire, Samain, Mallarmé and quickly exhibited at various international exhibitions (Munich Secession in 1893, Salon pour l'Art in Brussels, etc.). He won a Gold Medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. The drawing presented to you is certainly preparatory to one of the illustrations of Chrysis or La Cérémonie matinale by Pierre Louÿs, published in 1899.
