Alphonse CHANTEAU (Nantes 1874-1958 Crozon) Exaltation of the Holy Cross; sketch of the panel executed in the church of Roscanvel (Finistère) 1950 oil on panel 51 x 25.5 cm signed, titled and dedicated 'Alphonse Chanteau / To Jean-Claude Floch / Exaltation of the Holy Cross' at the bottom; on the back: annotations specifying that the painting was blessed on September 8, 1950 by Monsignor Fauvel at Folgoët. A student of Luc-Olivier Merson and Albert Besnard, appointed official painter of the Navy in 1910, Alphonse Chanteau is also a renowned decorator. After participating in the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts for about ten years, he sent his works to the Salon of the Societies of Engraving and Etching. Originally from Nantes, the artist drew inspiration from the landscapes of Finistère that would follow him throughout his life. He decorated many private mansions and villas in Morgat and contributed to many illustrated magazines such as the New York World, Le Courrier français and Pearson's Magazine. The painting presented to you was created to adorn the altar of the church of Roscanvel. It was donated by the artist on August 15, 1950, and then blessed by Monsignor Fauvel, Bishop of Quimper and Léon. It was then exhibited on the altar of the Virgin on September 8, 1950 at Folgoët. The Musée d'Orsay holds a decorative panel by the artist, certainly exhibited at the 1909 Salon. (Inv. ARO 1988 13)
