This bicorne hat, emblematic of the senior officers of the National Guard or the cavalry, bears witness to the refinement and military prestige of the early 19th century. Description of the adjutant commandant's bicorne: Made of black felt, it features an elaborate braid made up of three alternating silver twists, 6 mm in diameter, which are doubled around the uniform button. The latter, in stamped silver metal, takes up the distinctive model of adjutant commandants. On the front, a woven cockade in three colors – blue in the center, red and silver – with a diameter of 7.8 cm, recalls the attachment to republican values. A twisted tassel, matching the silver ornaments, is sewn onto the end of the horns, reinforcing the elegance of the hairstyle. The inner edges are decorated with curly black ostrich feathers, giving an imposing and noble appearance to this military accessory. The hat has remarkable dimensions: Front height from the curved part: 20.5 cm Front height from the bottom of the horns: 26 cm Back height from the curved part: 27 cm Back height from the bottom of the horns: 35 cm Total length: 45 cm The interior is carefully designed with a black waxed leather sweatband, topped with a black silk headdress, providing comfort and distinction to its wearer. The depth of the headdress is 13.5 cm. The special rank of adjutant commandant: The adjutant commandant was an intermediate rank specific to the armies of the Revolution and the Empire, often assimilated to a chief of staff within divisions and brigades. Created to effectively structure military units, this rank conferred on its holder major administrative and operational responsibilities. Under the Empire, the adjutant commandant wore a distinctive uniform, often adorned with silver embroidery and majestic bicornes like this one. This rank gradually disappeared under the Restoration, but remained a strong symbol of intermediate command during the Napoleonic Wars.
