"Antique Hand Carved Marble Venetian Chapter"
Centennial Venetian capital carved in marble. Dating from the 17th/18th century. Corinthian style. Recognizable by its rich decoration of acanthus leaves and spirals. This style originated in Greek architecture of the 5th century BC, before becoming popular in Roman times. A capital forms the head or upper end of a column or pilaster, usually to transfer the load or force to a narrower, often sculpted, supporting surface.
