Pocket watch "Alpina", circa 1930.The history of Alpina begins with a house founded in 1883 in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva, Switzerland. Its founder, Gottlieb Hauser, founded the Swiss Watch Union together with other independent watchmakers in the Winterthur region. Initially the production focused on the assembly of components, but soon Alpina became a manufacturer, producing internally movements.
From 1901, the Alpina brand began to appear on high-end watches. Between 1909 and 1922, Alpina expanded its production by opening production sites in Biel, Geneva, Besançon and Glashutte. He competes with A. Lange Sohne, who feels threatened and tries to prevent Alpina from conquering the German market on the pretext that too many components are manufactured outside of Germany. During the first modal war, supplies from Germany were limited, which led to the victory of A. Lange Sohne.
In 1917, the company «Union Horlogère» is officially dissolved. After the First World War, Alpina began to conquer the foreign market, with sales outlets ranging from Lisbon to Copenhagen and Moscow.
Part of the success came in 1938, when the Alpina 4 made its debut.
This issue has been chosen in homage to the 4 fundamental principles that have made the brand a quality manufacturer responding to these 4 concepts: anti-magnetism, waterproof, impact-resistant and stainless steel case.
The emergence of low-priced mass products also puts Alpina Watch International SA in crisis, which sees the arrival in 1972
of German investors who took over all its shares. Nevertheless, Alpina managed to reappear in 2002 thanks to the acquisition by Frédérique Constant SA. In 2006, thanks to the new production site in Geneva, Alpina successfully resumes production. In 2016, Alpina and Frédérique Constant enter the Citizen orbit.
