Thailand, Sukhothai, 1950s/1960s, superb and important bronze Buddha head presented on a base. The face, of beautiful finesse, reflects a profound serenity. He wears a headdress known as "one hundred and eight snails." According to legend, these are said to have saved Buddha's life while he was sitting in the sun, immersed in deep meditation. The elegant protuberance visible at the top of the skull corresponds to Buddha's bun (unisha). Height 31 cm with the base. Depth 12 cm.
