JAPAN - Late Muromashi (1st half of the 16th century). Samurai Katana. FUSHI - KASHIRA in very finely chiseled, patinated and gilded copper suite depicting a samurai in armor and his mount under the storm, signature on the fushi. TSUKA in wood covered with ray skin, braided with blue silk. MENUKIS in chiseled and patinated copper depicting two of the seven gods of happiness. TSUBA maru-gatta in chiseled and patinated copper decorated with vine branches on a nanako background, the mimi gilded and hatched. SAYA in matt black lacquered wood, the kojiri depicting a branch of cherry blossom above the water in which one can see the reflection of the moon. HABAKI in copper. Straight blade, regular hamon, straight and well marked, the tang pierced twice. It is on one side of a horimono representing Fudo Myo-O, the guardian of the faith, and on the other side of bonjis (Sanskrit characters) and gomahashis (ritual sticks). Sold with the stand, its silk case for transport and its NBTHK certificate. NBTHK also known as Nihon Bijutsu Touken Hozon Kyokai (the Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword), is one of the oldest organizations for evaluating Japanese swords in modern Japan.
