Born in Uchizy in the Mâconnais between Mâcon and Chalon-sur-Saône, Devenet was a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and of Auguste Dumont at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He exhibited the plaster for his The Mother (Mâconnais peasant woman breastfeeding her child) at the Salon of 1882. Another terracotta example is in the collection of the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille.
