Object description :

"Early Chelsea Porcelain Pair Of Figurines "shepherd And Shepherdess" Gold Anchor Period C. 1752"
Rare Pair of Chelsea Porcelain Rococo Figures – Shepherd & Shepherdess, c. 1752 An exquisite and rare pair of mid-18th century Chelsea porcelain figures, depicting a shepherd and shepherdess in theatrical Rococo style. Finely modelled and richly hand-painted, each figure is seated on a floral Rococo-moulded base and accompanied by pastoral animals—a dog with the shepherd and a lamb with the shepherdess. The shepherd wears a feathered tricorne hat and vibrantly enamelled garments in cobalt blue and bright yellow, holding flowers in one hand. The shepherdess is dressed in a colourful gown, a yellow hat resting in her lap, also holding a bouquet. Both bases are decorated with applied floral elements, highlighted with delicate gilding and painted in brilliant enamels. The gold anchor mark on the base identifies these as Chelsea porcelain from circa 1752—during the prized “Gold Anchor” period, renowned for artistic sophistication and technical excellence. Chelsea was among the earliest porcelain manufactories in England, founded around 1743. Its wares were favoured by aristocracy and often given as royal gifts. These figures reflect Chelsea’s mastery of naturalistic detail and 18th-century pastoral themes, echoing the influence of contemporary painting and French porcelain models. Measurements
  • Shepherd: Height 20 cm, Width 11 cm, Depth 10.5 cm, Weight: 492 g
  • Shepherdess: Height 18 cm, Width 11 cm, Depth 10 cm, Weight: 656 g
  • Condition The shepherdess is missing her right arm from the elbow. Otherwise, both figures are in excellent antique condition, with no additional cracks, chips, or restoration. The enamels, paint, and gilding remain beautifully preserved with remarkable freshness and clarity. Minor firing flaws and expected age-related wear are present, consistent with 18th-century Chelsea porcelain.
