Large Antique Mason’s Patent Ironstone Tureen, Chinoiserie, c. 1830

A magnificent large antique Mason’s Patent Ironstone China tureen, dating to around 1830, richly decorated in the Chinoiserie style with a Famille Verte-inspired colour palette. This impressive piece exemplifies the fusion of Eastern decorative motifs with the strength and elegance of English Ironstone ceramics.

The oval-shaped tureen stands on moulded feet, giving it an elevated and refined appearance. The body and domed lid are vibrantly hand-painted with a pattern featuring exotic birds (peacocks), chrysanthemums, peonies, lotus blossoms, and intricate gilt scrollwork. The lid’s central panel depicts a stylised garden scene with birds and floral elements, framed by green-bordered reserves in the Famille Verte tradition. Ornate handles and a gilded finial crown the piece with further elegance.

Authenticity is confirmed by the Mason’s factory mark, present on both the underside of the tureen and the interior of the lid, verifying its place within the renowned Patent Ironstone China line. These hand-painted patterns were inspired by Chinese porcelain and demonstrate the popularity of Chinoiserie in early 19th-century England, as well as Mason’s commitment to decorative artistry.

Historical Background

Mason’s Ironstone was developed by Charles James Mason, who patented the durable Ironstone formula in 1813. The company was originally founded by Miles Mason in 1796 and quickly gained prominence for blending innovative ceramic technology with ornate decoration. The Mason’s brand became a hallmark of quality and design excellence, with their wares becoming fixtures in both domestic settings and high-end international trade.

Their products were often heavily influenced by Chinese export porcelain and employed hand-painted scenes in popular styles such as Chinoiserie and Imari. Famille Verte-style decoration, as seen here, became a popular choice among British ceramic makers aiming to emulate the luxurious appeal of Qing-dynasty porcelain. Today, Mason’s Ironstone is recognised as a key component of Britain’s ceramic heritage, and museum-quality pieces such as this tureen are highly desirable among collectors.
