NIVELT Roger (1899-1962) "African Dance" charcoal signed lower right, May 1926, located Djenné Africanism
Roger Nivelt entered the Académie Julian in Paris in 1919 after his demobilization, and took part in his first Salon in 1923. An “original and independent [ref. needed]” colonial painter, he won the Afrique-Occidentale Française prize in 1925, which enabled him to spend more than a year in Dogon country. After winning the Abd-el-Tif prize in 1934, that same year he was part of the Reygasse mission to the tomb of Tin Hinan in the Hoggar. An Orientalist and Africanist painter, Roger Nivelt follows in the footsteps of Paul Élie Dubois. He took part in the artistic competitions at the Olympic Games in 19322,3. He married painter Hélène Farey in 1941.
