Contrasting marks.
Rectangular box with chamfered corners resting on four nail claws, with a lid projecting towards the center and a plaque engraved with the owner's initials. On the outside, it has a frieze of plant motifs above the keyhole. In a private European collection, there is a sugar bowl with a hallmark similar to that of this piece (the initial A in a circle), a neoclassical work from Berlin, the work of Gottlob Ludwig Howalt, dated circa 1820. This type of sugar bowl with a closure was common in parts of northern Europe and took on a similar appearance to that of this piece after the invasion of Napoleon Bonaparte, with which French aesthetic models spread.
