Saint Catherine of Siena. Oil on canvas. Circa second half of the 17th century, after models by FRANCESCHINI, Baldassare (Volterra, 1611 Florence, 1689).
The figure of the Saint is presented, dressed in her Dominican habits, in three-quarter view, against a dark and neutral background, her hands clasped in prayer and the crown of thorns on her head, looking towards a table or shelf on which are flowers, a skull and a crucified Christ. This work is similar to another on the same subject by Carlo Dolci (Dulwick Picture Gallery, London). But also and especially to that of Baldassare Franceschini (nicknamed Il Volterrano) of whom several pieces are known, some attributed to the painter (Grenoble Museum in France, inventory MG407, with a canvas in the background; collections of the Duomo of Volterra in Italy), others to his entourage (Dulwich Picture Gallery, London). -
