On November 11, 1918, official posters were displayed in the streets of France to announce the signing of the armistice that ended the First World War. Written by government authorities, they declared the end of hostilities and the victory of the Allied forces over Germany. These posters were simple yet solemn, often bearing bold messages such as “Armistice Signed!” or “The War is Over!”, along with triumphant statements and tributes to the soldiers. They were received with relief and emotion by a population deeply affected by more than four years of war.
Some of the posters also outlined the main terms of the armistice, such as the evacuation of occupied territories, the surrender of German military equipment, and the Allied occupation of the left bank of the Rhine, providing concrete details of Germany’s capitulation.
