18th-century Soldier Cards
Set of miniature soldiers made of cut-out paper, painted in polychrome with traces of gilding, circa 1750–1780.
These soldiers are cut from playing cards from a tarot deck. Painted on both sides
This is likely a piece created by a soldier in the king’s service, either while garrisoned or on campaign, as a pastime and intended for his children.
It is common to find objects made in this way, including items from the trenches of World War I.
However, 18th-century figurines are extremely rare.
Itincludes: - 22 infantrymen (Height: 7 cm); - 3 cavalrymen (Height: 7.5 cm); - a peasant scene in front of a house (Height: 6 cm - Width: 10.5 cm). Some missing pieces and creases.
