On August 1, 1914, official posters were displayed throughout towns and villages in France to announce the General Mobilization Order. Published by the government, these posters informed men called to military service that they must report immediately to their assigned units. The posters, highly visible and written in a clear and solemn tone, emphasized that mobilization did not yet mean war, but was a precautionary measure in response to rising tensions in Europe. Nevertheless, they marked the beginning of France’s involvement in the First World War.
