"Drawing of a Left Profile of Orpheus with a Lyre in grease pencil signed Jean Cocteau" Jean COCTEAU (1889-1963) French poet, painter, designer, playwright and filmmaker. Jean Cocteau is a flamboyant, all-round artist who left his mark on the 20th century with his genius. He is also the author of many drawings and these are now presented throughout the world. Cocteau developed a great sensitivity and an obsession for certain poetic and mythological themes which were for him means of introspection such as the mirror, Oedipus, Orpheus, Antigone… Haunted by Beauty, he always surrounded himself with magnificent young men. This drawing ("attributed to" because without a certificate) represents the left profile of one of them. This one is perhaps inspired by Jean Marais, of whom Cocteau was the lover. Jean Marais whose beauty was recognized by all as he was also the “muse”. Original drawing on paper in grease pencil with signature at the bottom of the drawing and dated 1955. The work is protected under glass and surrounded by a modern beige wooden frame enhanced with moldings. Drawing format alone: 27 x 34 Framed format: 76 x 87
