Rare Miniature “notturno” Clock, Signé Calin - Mid-17th Century
Elegant miniature night clock dating from the mid-17th century, featuring an ebonized wooden case with a simple and essential design. The dial, painted on copper, depicts an allegorical scene: Death, represented by a skeleton, passes the hour cartouches to the god Chronos, who in turn hands them to the putti alternating on the hour satellite.
The mechanism is a small time-only movement, equipped with a fusee winding, verge escapement, and fixed pendulum. The back plate bears the signature “Giovan Pietro Calin a Genova.”
The back panel of the case can be opened, transforming into a shelf to place a candle or oil lamp, illuminating the pierced hours on the dial during the night.
The clock will be sold serviced and in working order.
Please note that the clock was published in the magazine la Clessidra n. 7 stamped in 1957 and in the book “Orologi Italiani dal‘500 all’800”, both edited by Antonio Simoni.
