Tavern scene, oil on copper, dimensions 25 cm x 34 cm, with its period carved wooden frame, 63 cm x 69 cm, by David II Teniers and workshop. A genre scene painter, David II Teniers (1610 - 1690) built his reputation on the depiction of taverns bringing together peasants drinking and playing cards as well as on depictions of village festivals. He honored the common people in small portraits and in rustic settings. Here it is a question of smokers and card players who drink.
