African Tribal Art - Dan Mask

Belgian collection.

Dan masks, of varying styles, are generally used at highly theatrical entertainment parties where women play a central role. The mask called "mocking", or Déanglé, embodies an ideal of beauty and benevolence, being sculpted in honor of the young girls of the village or renowned men. Each mask has a name linked to its specific function. Also used during circumcision rites, these masks appear alongside gle sö singing masks and large go ge masks, which are linked to go society, an institution responsible for dispensing justice and maintaining social order.
