This Japanese Satsuma bowl is extensively decorated both inside and out with various colored enamels and lavish gilt on a light-brown ground with panels. The interior features scenes of ladies in kimonos with children by the river shore, while the exterior is adorned with gilded lotus flowers, multi-colored leaves, and other intricate patterns. A beautiful gilded pattern is hand-painted on the top outer and inner edges. The bowl was produced by the famous Kinkozan factory. The Kinkozan family has been associated with pottery since 1645 and became the largest producer of Satsuma ware by a single company from the end of the 19th century until the factory closed in 1927. This piece is export ware, made for Europe or the USA.
The bowl is a faience piece with multicolored and gilded decorations, often referred to as Satsuma ware. Satsuma ware pieces were originally developed in Japan during the seventeenth century, specifically in the southern regions of the Japanese island of Kyushu. The name comes from the region controlled by the Shimazu clan (Satsuma-han, officially Kagoshima and surrounding areas). The history dates back to around 1600 when Satsuma pottery was generally plain and made of dark clay, quite different from the 19th-century pieces made for export to the West.
