4/4 violin François Breton 19th century. “Breton” brand on the heel of the handle and “BRETON BREVETE DE SAR” label inside the case.

The name of François Breton (1750-1830) appears in the taxpayer registers of Mirecourt from 1778 to 1830, where he is said to be a master luthier. The work of François Breton is well known, his violins are of good quality, with a light yellow varnish and a slightly large pattern as is often the case at that time. He was a “patented luthier to the Duchess of Angoulème”.
