View of the entrance to the Grand Canal in Venice with a gondola and sailboats. One can see the Doge’s palace, the cupolas of the San Marco basilica as well as its bell tower.   The quick brush strokes and shimmering colors reflect the atmosphere of the Serenissima.

Albert Henri Félix Gérard (1873-1950) is a Belgian painter born in Vincennes. Also known under the name of Henry Gérard, with whom he signed his works, he is not to be confused with Henry Gérard (1860-1925), a Toulouse painter who mainly represented Provençal landscapes. Active in Paris, he specialized in the views of Venice and its lagoon, in a post-impressionist style with a vibrant touch and warm tones.
