We know little about Jules-Joseph Meynier, who joined the Beaux-Arts of Paris in 1844, in the workshops of Gleyre then Delaroche . He produced mainly religious and mythological paintings, as well as portraits, and some genre scenes, exhibited at the Salon from 1853 to his death. Napoleon III bought him a Fortune Teller at the Salon of 1865. We know of a few paintings, like our study on the motif, painted in Italy in 1850 and 1851, which certainly correspond to a study stay.
