"Ancient Chinese Dragon Rug. Around 1920"
China, circa 1920, five-clawed dragon with phoenix, cloud patterns, mountain and wave symbols on beige background.Wool rugs were favored by the Chinese for their softness, durability and luster. They were mainly used to cover temple benches, to pray or to hang on walls. Colors and patterns depended on the region where they were made. Wool rugs were rarely used for the floor, where felt rugs and carpets were laid, because they deteriorated easily due to the intense heat and high humidity of summer.
