Paul Jean Martel (1879-1944) was a Belgian-American Post-Impressionist painter born in Laken, Belgium. He immigrated with his family to Philadelphia in 1889 and returned to his native country in 1895, where he studied at the Royal Academy of Brussels under Joseph Stallaert. He spent a few years in the United States continuing his studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before returning to Europe in 1911, where he exhibited in Brussels, London, and Paris. In 1920, he participated in the Antwerp Triennial Exhibition before returning permanently to the United States three years later. He exhibited his work in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, and other cities until the 1940s.
