Large pastel, circa 1765, by Madame Lenoir, fashion goods merchant, mother of Alexandre Lenoir, creator of the Museum of French Monuments.

Large pastel portrait, Louis XV period, of Catherine Louise Lenoir née Adam (1738-1790). She is shown seated, richly dressed with elegant fashion accessories on her, beautifully styled, holding a book with pages clearly visible in its delivery cover. This large portrait of a beautiful woman from the Louis 15th period is of remarkable human expression in its treatment and in the presence expressed by the person. Exceptional pastel made around 1765. To appreciate all its qualities, it is interesting to get closer to the portrait of Madame Lenoir painted by Joseph Duplessis, present at the Louvre, the latter officially exhibited at the salon of 1769, was already presented in 1764 at the Academy of Saint-Luc. Madame Lenoir, born Adam in Paris, had created and developed a well-known business in fashion accessories such as those seen on her clothes. Alexandre Lenoir, his son, was a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture under Gustave Doyen in 1788; in 1795, in agreement with the National Convention, he created “the museum of French monuments” in order to bring together objects and works of art confiscated from national property, and/or partially survived from the destruction decreed by the Convention in 1793 and 1794, including the dismembered remains of the centuries-old royal family from their tombs in Saint-Denis.
